Sticker prices on both platforms rarely reflect what you actually pay at checkout. We booked the same 3-night stays — same neighborhood, same star rating — in Lisbon, Prague, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Berlin.
The fee gap
Airbnb's displayed nightly rate consistently looked cheaper, but service and cleaning fees added an average of 18% at checkout across our five test bookings. Booking.com's final price matched the displayed rate almost exactly, aside from local tourist tax.
Where Airbnb won
For stays of a week or longer, Airbnb's automatic weekly and monthly discounts (up to 20%) meaningfully undercut equivalent Booking.com apartment listings.
Cancellation flexibility
- Booking.com: 'Free cancellation' is clearly labeled on most listings, refund is fast
- Airbnb: policy varies per host (Flexible / Moderate / Strict), easy to book a non-refundable stay by accident
Our verdict
For short 2-4 night city breaks, Booking.com's transparent pricing and Genius loyalty discount usually wins. For week-plus stays, check Airbnb's monthly discount first — it's hard to beat.
