We Tested Fitbit's Sleep and Heart-Rate Accuracy Against a Clinical Monitor
A four-week test comparing Fitbit Charge and Sense data against a medical-grade reference device to see how much you should trust the numbers.

Consumer wearables are convenient, but how close are they really to clinical accuracy? We wore a Fitbit Charge and a Fitbit Sense alongside a medical-grade pulse oximeter and actigraphy sleep monitor for four weeks.
Resting and daytime heart rate
Both devices tracked within 3-5 beats per minute of the clinical reference during rest and light activity — accurate enough for general fitness tracking and trend monitoring.
During intense exercise
Accuracy dropped during rapid heart-rate changes, such as interval sprints, where the optical sensor lagged the clinical reference by up to 12 bpm for several seconds before catching up.
Sleep tracking
Total sleep time was consistently close to the reference device, but Fitbit tended to overestimate deep sleep by roughly 15-20 minutes per night — useful for spotting trends, not for diagnosing a sleep disorder.
Our verdict
Fitbit devices are reliable for everyday trend tracking and motivation, but shouldn't replace clinical equipment if you're investigating a specific medical concern.
